How to check a Massachusetts HVAC contractor

Why there is no single “HVAC licence”
Massachusetts does not issue one HVAC licence. Refrigerant work, ductwork and gas-line work are regulated by three different boards, and consumer protection is a fourth, separate registration. A contractor can legitimately hold one and not the others.
The refrigeration licence is legally required only on systems of 10 tons and above. A typical home needs 2 to 5 tons, so a residential installer may hold none of the three trade licences and still be operating entirely legally. That is why asking “are you licensed?” gets you a yes that means very little.
Refrigeration — Refrigeration Technician / Contractor

Refrigerant work. Legally required only on systems of 10 tons and above — a typical home needs 2 to 5 tons.
Sheet metal — Sheet Metal Worker
Issued by: Board of Examiners of Sheet Metal Workers
Fabricating and installing ductwork and ventilation.
Gas fitting — Gas Fitter / Plumber
Issued by: Board of State Examiners of Plumbers & Gas Fitters
Anything touching a gas line — boilers, furnaces, oil-to-gas conversions.
HIC — Home Improvement Contractor registration
Issued by: Office of Consumer Affairs & Business Regulation
Not a skills licence. It is what gives you access to the state arbitration programme and the Guaranty Fund if the job goes wrong.
