Not a skills licence. It is what gives you access to the state arbitration programme and the Guaranty Fund if the job goes wrong.

- Does Massachusetts require an HVAC licence?
- There is no single Massachusetts HVAC licence. Refrigerant work is licensed by the Bureau of Pipefitters, Refrigeration Technicians and Sprinkler Fitters; ductwork by the Board of Examiners of Sheet Metal Workers; gas-line work by the Board of State Examiners of Plumbers and Gas Fitters. Separately the Office of Consumer Affairs registers Home Improvement Contractors. A refrigeration licence is legally required only at 10 tons and above, so a residential installer working on a 3-ton system may hold none of them.
- Which licence actually protects me as a homeowner?
- The Home Improvement Contractor registration. It is not a skills qualification, but it is what gives you access to the state arbitration programme and the Guaranty Fund if the work goes wrong. A contractor can be entirely legal without one and you still lose that recourse.
- How much is the Mass Save heat pump rebate in 2026?
- The whole-home rebate is $2,650 per ton capped at $8,500, down from $3,000 per ton in 2025, plus $500 bonuses for documented correct sizing and for pairing with weatherisation. Income-qualified households can reach $16,000. The HEAT Loan carries 0% interest up to $25,000 over seven years.
- Why do R-410A heat pumps no longer qualify for Mass Save?
- As of January 2026 Mass Save pays a rebate only on systems using R-32 or R-454B refrigerant. R-410A equipment is excluded entirely. An installer clearing 2025 R-410A stock can quote a lower sticker price that costs thousands more once the rebate is denied. Ask which refrigerant is in the quote before you sign.
